In the spring and summer of 2014, CeCe and Michelle spent weeks pulling in more and more family trees. I’d get a message from someone willing to share their tree with me and forward it to them. Michelle took people’s DNA data and added it to a massive spreadsheet. People who shared the same segment of DNA were arranged into groupings. CeCe’s spreadsheets and Michelle’s stickies multiplied.

My Ancestry page produced a bunch of potential matches from Tennessee. Michelle triangulated all the Tennessee hits and attached my DNA to their trees, looking for any ancestors who matched any of my other DNA matches. Two Tennesseans—Thomas Bean and his grandmother Betty Towle Bean—were both good matches for me, and had a well-built family tree. CeCe and Michelle attached my DNA to their tree, expecting to see shared ancestor hints.

But none emerged, and that was baffling. The only conclusion was that the tree was somehow incorrect. They dug deeper, trying to see precisely how I was connected to the Beans. Then they found a segment on chromosome 15—one of the twenty-three pairs of chromosomes in humans—that was shared by the three of us. This is what it looked like on a spreadsheet:
